begin tonight with breaking news. late today, republicans launched a new attack on the obama administration. and on regular americans all across the country. senate republicans are vowing to block richard cadre, president obama's pick to head the consumer financial protection bureau. that's the agency elizabeth warren set up to make sure big banks don't prey on regular americans. but, today, 43 republicans sent a letter saying they're worried the agency has too much power over the banks. and they won't allow the nomination to go ahe. this is outrageous. the right wing is doing everything it can to block this president. to stand against working class people. and to stand up for wall street. that i had' they're even willing to hurt the economy itself. it's that's what it takes to hurt the president, they're willing to do it. >> any immediate economic setback or the perception of one could weaken obama's clout. maybe a sour economy is worth it if it will distract obama. >> there's a lot of talk these days about how the gop can come back politically. the quickest possible way pol

tonight in the fall of 2008 when president obama was first elected. he was elected on november 4th, 2008. and after the partisan combat of that election faded quickly and the country absorbed that this was going to be our new president of the united states, the approval ratings for barack obama soared. his approval rates went to 79%. by inauguration day 2009, nearly two million people would turn out on the national mall to see him sworn in. it was a heady, heady time whether or not you had voted for him. but of course that was not true for everybody. election day was november 4th. november 10th, so six days later, not even a week later, there was one republican congressman from georgia who was already denouncing the president-elect as both a marxist and a nazi. if you think about it, it's kind of a hard thing to pull off simultaneously, right? a marxist and a nazi? look at the time stamp here. november 10th, 2008. congressman paul broun of georgia telling the associated press already at that point that he, quote, fears that president-elect obama will establish a gestapo-like securi

>>> let me finish tonight with this. the obama administration has found a way to offer birth control to women who want it without infringing on religious belief. it's a victory for the president and roman catholics. how do we ensure that women get birth control? how do we insure that religious institutions aren't forced to pay for it? access to stand-alone-coverage. changes where they will put their policies on sale. the key here is it gets around a pair of goals that were in conflict, are not anymore. one goal is to reduce dramatically the number of unwanted pregnancies. regular use of birth control is one way that works. in this case, the catholic church is protected from having to pay for birth control insurance. my own idea is the solution the obama reached is win-win. getting birth control to women for free will help to make it free. to keep the catholic church out of that transaction makes it no less beneficial to the goal of averting unwanted pregnancies. and with them in many cases, the decision to have an abortion. this is what good, smart, progressive morally uprigh

heard about it. president obama continued the push for commonsense gun reform today in minneapolis. he was surrounded by law enforcement officers with the city and the state. the president asked americans to stand with the men and women in the line of fire. >> weapons of war have no place on our streets or in our schools or threatening our law enforcement officers. our law enforcement officers should never be outgunned on the streets. . president obama thinks that it should not be linked to stronger border security, but the republican plan, eric cantor, does want to see that linked to border security. so today president obama going to use his bully pulpit. he's going to meet with labor leaders and ceos and he's going to make the case to them that immigration reform is good for the economy. here's a look at who he's going to be meeting with in terms of the labor leaders. richard trumka of the afl-cio, eliseo medina, lloyd blankfein, and arnie sorenson, among others. so those are just a few of the folks with whom he will be meeting this afternoon. of course, time is of the essence, thomas. the president believes he has about a year, year and a half, to really make movements on some of these other policy issues, like gun control, like immigration reform. as you know, he was in minnesota yet, pressing for new gun safety measures. so i think this is a tactic you're going to see this white house continue with over the next several weeks. >> when you say time is of the essence, because of 2014, the midterms com
